A recent survey by the World Gold Council (along with Malabar Gold and Metals focus) has shed light on the jewellery preferences of Tamil brides.
An usual Tamil wedding sees the bride decked in about 300 grams of gold jewellery on an average, the survey, part of the World Gold Council's India's gold market: evolution and innovation report, found.
Beside the mangalsutra, these gold bangles are considered essential Muthu Valayal, Lakshmi Valayal and Kemu Valayal.
Among earrings it is the Kempu Kal Jhimkki that occupies pride of place.
In necklaces the more famous ones are the Lakshmi Haram and Muthu Haram.
The Ottiyanam, nethichutty and jadai billai are also considered essential as is the vella kal mookhuthi (nose ring).
