YM Movies Team
One Heart certainly shows that AR Rahman has a big heart. Touted to be India’s first concert film, One Heart is not just about AR Rahman, the film also showcases various talents and how he formed the band with Haricharan, Ranjit Barot, Devi Rani Rajeev, Jonita Gandhi, Annette Philip, Ann Marie Calhoun, Mohini and Keba Jeremiah.
One Heart basically transports us from the movie hall to a live concert atmosphere, we can see all the nuances and efforts the musicians put in to bring out those magical tunes to the audiences. The small episodes including how Devi Rani Rajeev thought Rahman’s call as a prank when the Academy Award winning music composer wanted her to be a part of the concert, Jonita Gandhi’s overwhelming journey of singing to ARR’s songs on YouTube and events to croon his own compositions, Ann Marie Calhoun’s experience in working with the maestro are endearing watch.
Logan Lucky review: A lumbering tale
with slack comedy | Sameer review: Brings up
an explosive subject
One Heart has also captured a few light hearted personal moments of AR Rahman— the maestro’s video call asking his daughter on a hot- air balloon asking ‘Shall daddy jump?’, club hopping with his band for musical experience and photo shoot session with his wife depicts the other side of the composer.
The concert filled with Rahman’s work with Mani Ratnam(Dil Se Re, Chinna Chinna Aasai, Endrendrum Punnagai, Velai Pookal, Tere Bine) Imtiaz Ali (Nadaan Parindey, Patakha Guddi) and many Hindi chartbusters.
Rahman says that it’s the band instinct to choose the list of songs to perform and there have always been requests from audiences to sing their favorites but due to time constraints, the composer always have to make tough decisions. Rahman’s mindset and pressure behind every concert and his first experience of watching a live concert as a kid are some of the interesting facts to know about the composer.
On the downside, the movie has a docu-feel and it would’ve been great if the makers highlighted the preparation and what it really takes to execute a live concert by covering the backstage happenings. Nevertheless, for people who can’t afford Rahman’s expensive concerts can get the magical experience by buying themselves a movie ticket for One Heart.
One Heart review-Verdict: Endearing musical experience
